As I mentioned in the Introduction to my website, people most commonly sought help from me for the following problems in living:

  1. Depression, Anxiety and Grief
  2. Self-defeating Life Patterns and Addictions
  3. Romantic Relationship Problems
  4. Parenting and Family Challenges
  5. Work and Career Challenges

I discovered in my own life in recovery and in my work with many people that the roots of many of these widespread problems in living often began with painful and sometimes tragic childhood experiences. I identified what I describe as Family Trauma Syndrome, and subsequently specialized in helping people heal from childhood hurts and learn to build fulfilling lives and families once they had access to practical new information, skills and support. As my understanding of Family Trauma Syndrome and Recovery grew, my training in systems from community mental health led me to follow this thread in work with couples, families, schools and other community agencies.

Recovery Goes on for Life

Many of us who were wounded as children must overcome Enduring Emotional Adjustments, Self-Defeating Life Patterns, and Chemical and Behavioral Addictions. Most of us cannot recover until we understand precisely what we faced as children, and how those invisible wounds have shaped our adult lives and relationships. We need guidance and support from our personal network, from self-help organizations, and from psychotherapists.

We don’t become “as good as new” during recovery. Beyond grieving childhood losses, we must acquire effective new habits and skills, learn to listen to our own hearts, and find our unique place in the world of relationships and making a living. However, wonderful gifts emerge when you take the opportunity to heal yourself and learn to care for your inner child self. The process of healing is intrinsically humbling but gives you compassion, hope and wisdom to share with others.

Individual, Family and Community Steps to Recovery are Complicated but Not Impossible

Thankfully, there have been huge advances in our understanding of trauma, its many manifestations, and the process of healing over the last 50 years. I found in my work that my most important tasks were often teaching people about the invisible dynamics that were distorting their lives at home, in schools, at work, and in their communities, and coaching them step-by-step on their journey to health and wholeness. My final work before retiring was publishing two self-help books on Amazon.

This represent the distillation of two central dimensions of my professional work–and I want to share each concept it includes in order to provide you with a Roadmap for Your Recovery.
